Walmart Recalls Ground Beef Over E. Coli Contamination

Over 16000 pounds of raw ground beef sold at Walmart stores nationwide have been recalled due to possible contamination with E. coli.

The recall was issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) on May 2, 2024. The raw ground beef items were produced on March 28, 2024 and are no longer available for purchase.

The recalled ground beef products are packaged in clear plastic trays with black foam pads. The trays bear the establishment number “EST. 19895” inside the USDA mark of inspection. The following products are subject to the recall:

  • 1-pound packages of “Great Value Ground Beef 80% Lean 20% Fat” with lot code “23040102”
  • 3-pound packages of “Great Value Ground Beef 80% Lean 20% Fat” with lot code “23040103”
  • 5-pound packages of “Great Value Ground Beef 80% Lean 20% Fat” with lot code “23040104”

Consumers who have purchased any of these products are urged to not eat them. The ground beef should be discarded or returned to the store for a full refund.

E. coli is a bacteria that can cause serious foodborne illness, including abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting. In severe cases, E. coli can cause kidney failure and even death.

The FSIS is investigating the source of the contamination and is working to ensure that all contaminated products are removed from the market.

Consumers with questions about the recall can contact Walmart’s customer service at 1-800-925-6278.
