Thousands of Afghans Fleeing into Iran
Iran sees surge in undocumented Afghan refugees
UNHCR warns of potential crisis for Europe
In 2022, the Iranian government conducted a census of all undocumented Afghan nationals in the country, including those who had recently arrived following the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan.
Since then, the number of Afghan refugees fleeing into Iran has surged, with an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 people crossing the border daily, according to a local aid organization. This influx has put a strain on Iran's resources, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has warned that the situation could escalate into a crisis for Europe.
UNHCR Iran has received only 23% of the $1.14 billion needed to address the humanitarian needs of Afghan refugees and host communities, leaving a significant funding gap.
